Dormeo Review
The brand behind Octaspring, one of the few genuinely different mechanisms in mattress construction. The idea is clever and the execution is mid-market.

Verdict
The brand behind Octaspring, which is one of the few genuinely different mechanisms in mattress construction: foam cut into cylindrical spring shapes so it behaves like a spring rather than a slab. The idea is clever and the execution is mid-market, which is a fair description of the whole brand.
Buy it if
You want the airflow benefit of a spring structure without actual springs, and you have found it heavily discounted.
Avoid it if
You are paying anywhere near list price, or you want the durability of steel.

The scores
A genuinely interesting idea executed at mid-market level and priced with heavy discounting.
Fair on a deep discount. Poor at list, which is true of most of this brand's pricing.
Individual foam cylinders respond independently, which is better than a foam slab.
The spaces between cylinders let air move. This is the real benefit of the design.
Foam construction with no steel perimeter.
Individually responding foam units damp movement well.
Check the terms with the seller, since Dormeo sells through many channels.
What Octaspring actually is
Take a block of foam and cut it into individual cylinders, each shaped so that it compresses and recovers on its own. Arrange those cylinders in a layer. You now have something that behaves more like a spring unit than like a foam slab, made entirely from foam.
That is Octaspring, and it is a genuinely clever piece of engineering with two real consequences.
Airflow. The gaps between cylinders are open channels. A foam slab has nowhere for air to go; a field of foam cylinders does. This is why Dormeo's temperature score is an 8 rather than the 5 a comparable foam mattress would get.
Independent response. Each cylinder compresses according to the load directly above it, so the surface contours more locally than a slab does.
What it does not give you is steel. Foam fatigues over years in a way steel does not, whatever shape it is cut into, and that is the honest limit of the idea.
Judge Dormeo at the sale price
Dormeo operates a high list price with heavy, near-permanent discounting, in the same pattern I describe on the Emma deals page.
That makes list prices close to meaningless for comparison. If you read a review ranking Dormeo against other brands using list prices, the ranking tells you nothing about the market.
Judge the cash price on the day. At a genuine discount, an Octaspring mattress is a reasonable purchase and the technology is worth having. At list, it is not competitive with what Otty or Origin put into a mattress at similar money.
A correction worth making
Commonly repeated, and wrong
Foam and spring are treated as a binary choice in almost every mattress buying guide, and there is a third category that fits neither description. Foam cut into individually responding cylindrical units behaves mechanically more like a spring layer than a slab, with open channels for airflow and localised rather than area-wide compression. It is not a spring, because it still fatigues as foam does. Describing it as either foam or hybrid misses what it actually is.
Should you buy it?
Yes on a genuine discount, if the airflow benefit of the Octaspring structure appeals and you want foam rather than steel.
If you want the same airflow benefit with actual springs and better durability, the Otty Original at around 500 pounds does it with a 16 centimetre steel spring layer.

Questions people ask
What is Octaspring?
Foam cut into individual cylinders, each compressing and recovering on its own, arranged in a layer. It behaves more like a spring unit than a foam slab, with open channels between cylinders for airflow and localised rather than area-wide compression. It still fatigues as foam does.
Is Dormeo good value?
On a genuine discount, yes. Dormeo runs high list prices with heavy near-permanent discounting, so list prices are close to meaningless for comparison. Judge the cash price on the day, because at list it is not competitive with what Otty or Origin offer at similar money.
