Exclusive lines exist to stop you comparing
The big UK bed chains sell a substantial proportion of exclusive lines: mattresses made for them under their own brands, or exclusive specifications of a manufacturer's model with a different name.
The consequence is deliberate. You try something in store, go home to compare prices, and cannot, because the exact model does not exist anywhere else. There is no price to check against.
This is not dishonest, and it is worth naming, because a shopper who does not know it will spend an evening searching for a model number that returns one result.
What to do instead. Take the specification away rather than the name: depth, spring count, spring type, whether the base is sprung or foam, and firmness. Those four travel between retailers where model names deliberately do not. Then compare against multi-brand retailers and direct sellers on those numbers.
What gel-infused foam actually does
Therapur's ranges are built around gel-infused foam, which is worth being precise about.
Gel conducts heat better than foam, so at the point of contact it draws warmth from your skin faster than untreated foam would. That produces the cool-to-the-touch sensation and it is real.
The heat then needs somewhere to go. In an all-foam mattress there is nowhere: it moves a few centimetres and stops, because foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement. So the cooling effect fades within the hour.
In a mattress with a spring layer, heat reaching the springs can actually leave. Gel over foam is a treatment. Gel over springs is a treatment on top of a mechanism. When comparing Therapur models, look for a spring layer and its depth before looking at what the comfort layer is called.
What a chain genuinely gives you
Since the price cannot be compared, it is worth being clear about what you get for it.
You can lie on it. Ten minutes in your actual sleeping position, with a pillow of roughly your usual height, both of you if you share. That is worth more than any review including this one, and it is the single thing online sellers cannot offer.
Delivery, room of choice and disposal. Mattress disposal typically costs 20 to 40 pounds through a council collection and usually requires getting it to the kerb yourself. A retailer taking the old one away has genuine cash value that never appears in a price comparison.
A real returns operation. Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act sit with the retailer, not the manufacturer, and a large one is easier to claim against than a small one.
