Verdict

7.0/ 10

A mattress topper, and the question this page answers is the one people should ask before buying any topper: is this money better spent on a mattress? There is an arithmetic answer and most people never do the sum.

Buy it if

Your mattress is sound, has years left, and is simply firmer than you want.

Avoid it if

Your mattress is over about seven years old or has a dip. You are spending on something you will throw away with it.

The scores

Overall
7 / 10

A sound topper, and whether you should buy one at all is the more useful question.

Value
7 / 10

Fair, and check the discount schemes before comparing prices.

Softening
7 / 10

Does the job a topper is for.

Temperature
6 / 10

Depends on the fill. Foam warms you; open structures do not.

Stability
5 / 10

A topper does not provide support. Scoring it otherwise would mislead.

Durability
7 / 10

Reasonable life. Toppers take concentrated wear and none last forever.

Trial and guarantee
7 / 10

Standard terms, with broad discount eligibility.

The sum nobody does

A topper is worth buying when it extends the useful life of a mattress that has life left. It is false economy when it postpones a replacement you are going to make anyway.

Topper or mattress
Your mattressWhat to do
Under 5 years, sound, too firmBuy the topper. You have years of use to improve.
5 to 7 years, sound, too firmBorderline. A topper bought now is thrown away with the mattress in a few years.
Over 7 years, or any dip over 25mmPut the money toward a mattress. A topper follows a dip within weeks.
Any age, but the base is wrongFix the base first. Slats over 7.5cm apart cause sagging and void guarantees.

The point of the middle row: a good topper is a meaningful fraction of a decent budget mattress. Silentnight's Sleep Now starts at 169 pounds and Emma's Original Lite is 199 with a three-zone spring layer. If the mattress is nearly done, the topper money is most of a replacement.

Three checks before spending anything

Measure for a dip. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point. More than about 25 millimetres and a topper will follow it.

Measure your slat gaps. Over about 7.5 centimetres and your base is causing the sagging and voiding the guarantee. A sheet of plywood costs a fraction of a topper.

Check your pillow height. A great deal of discomfort blamed on a mattress is a pillow at the wrong height, and testing it is free. Lie in your sleeping position for ten minutes and have someone look at you from behind.

Those three cost nothing and between them they resolve a large share of the complaints that send people looking for a topper.

If a topper is the answer, choose on heat

Choose on the middle column
TypeSoftensEffect on heat
Memory foamStronglyMakes you warmer
Spacer mesh or micro-springModeratelyNeutral to cooling
LatexModerately, with bounceNeutral
WoolMildlyRegulates moisture

Softening and warmth move together, because softening means conforming around you and conforming means less air moving. There is no topper that changes a lot and cools.

And every topper slides. Plan the anchoring on day one: corner straps, or a deep fitted sheet sized for the mattress plus the topper together.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Mattress toppers are treated as a cheap alternative to replacing a mattress, and the arithmetic is frequently against it. A good topper is a meaningful fraction of a decent budget mattress, so one bought for a mattress with a year or two left is money thrown away with it. A topper is worth buying when it improves a mattress with years of life remaining, and false economy when it postpones a replacement that is coming anyway.

Should you buy it?

Yes if your mattress is under about five years old, structurally sound, and simply firmer than you want.

If it is over seven years old or has a dip, put the money toward a mattress instead. Do the three free checks first, because between them they resolve a large share of the complaints that send people looking for a topper.

Questions people ask

Is a mattress topper worth it?

When the mattress has years of life left and is simply too firm, yes. When the mattress is over about seven years old, a good topper is a meaningful fraction of a decent replacement and you are throwing that money away with the mattress.

What should I check before buying a topper?

Three free things. Measure the mattress for a dip over about 25mm. Measure your slat gaps, because over 7.5cm your base is causing the sagging. And check your pillow height, because a lot of discomfort blamed on a mattress is a pillow at the wrong height.
