Verdict

6.9/ 10

A foam topper from a brand better known for springs, and the thing that decides whether you should buy any topper is a measurement you can take in thirty seconds. Most people buying one have not taken it.

Buy it if

Your mattress is structurally sound, too firm, and you do not already sleep hot.

Avoid it if

Your mattress has dipped. A topper will follow the dip and the money is gone.

The scores

Overall
6.9 / 10

Does its job well. The job is narrower than most buyers assume.

Value
7 / 10

Reasonable at Mlily's pricing.

Softening
6 / 10

Takes the edge off a firm mattress without remaking it.

Temperature
5 / 10

Adding foam to a bed makes it warmer, not cooler.

Stability
5 / 10

A topper does not provide support. Scoring it otherwise would mislead.

Durability
6 / 10

Expect several years before it compresses into the mattress beneath.

The 25 millimetre rule

Measure before you buy anything

A topper changes firmness. It does not change support.

If your mattress has a dip of more than about 25 millimetres, a topper will follow that dip within a few weeks and you will have spent the money for nothing. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point.

Toppers are for a structurally sound mattress that is simply too firm, or for changing the surface feel. They are not a repair, and using one to delay replacing a failed mattress costs you the money that would have contributed to the replacement.

Choose a topper on heat, not thickness

Choose on the middle column
TypeSoftensEffect on heat
Memory foamStronglyMakes you warmer
Micro-spring or foam cylinderModeratelyNeutral to cooling
LatexModerately, with bounceNeutral
WoolMildlyRegulates moisture

Softening is the easy part and every topper does it. The heat consequence is what people get wrong.

A foam topper on a hybrid is the worst case: it sits above the springs and cuts you off from the airflow that was doing the cooling. If you bought a hybrid partly for its temperature, do not put foam on top of it.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Mattress toppers are compared on thickness and firmness, as though they all do the same job with more or less of it. The material matters far more than the depth. A memory foam topper adds insulation and makes a warm sleeper warmer, and on a hybrid it sits above the springs and cuts the sleeper off from the airflow that was doing the cooling. Choosing on thickness is how people end up sleeping softer and considerably hotter.

Should you buy it?

Yes if your mattress is sound, too firm, and you do not already sleep hot. Measure for a dip first.

If you sleep warm, buy wool or a micro-spring topper instead. If the mattress has dipped, put the money toward a replacement.

Questions people ask

Will a topper fix a sagging mattress?

No. A topper conforms to the surface beneath it, so a dip of more than about 25 millimetres reappears through it within weeks. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point first.

Should I put a foam topper on a hybrid mattress?

Not if you bought the hybrid partly for its temperature. A foam topper sits above the springs and cuts you off from the airflow that was doing the cooling. Wool or a micro-spring topper softens without that penalty.
