Mlily Haluna Natural 1500 Review

Natural fillings over 1,500 springs, which is the one combination in Mlily's natural range I would think twice about.

Verdict

6.6/ 10

Natural fillings over 1,500 springs, which is the entry point of Mlily's natural range and the one combination in it I would think twice about. Natural fibres produce a plush surface, and a plush surface needs a high spring count to work. Fifteen hundred is not a high spring count.

Buy it if

You are of lighter build, you want natural materials at the lowest price they are available at, and you can turn the mattress.

Avoid it if

You are of average or heavier build. Natural fillings at this spring count is the wrong pairing for you.

The scores

Overall
6.6 / 10

Good materials over a spring count that does not really support them.

Cheap for natural fillings, which are usually far more expensive.

The weakest score. A plush natural surface over 1,500 springs risks grouping.

Natural fibres manage moisture, which is the genuine benefit.

Edge support

Not reinforced, and natural fillings soften at the perimeter first.

Decoding the range

The number is the spring count, except in the foam ranges

In Mlily's Gel, Deluxe, Premier, Supreme and Haluna collections, the number in the model name is the spring count in a king size. In the Memory and Memory Gel collections there are no springs at all and the number is a tier marker.

Why this is the wrong combination

I said on the Haluna Natural 4000 that natural fillings and a high spring count belong together, so it would be inconsistent not to say the opposite here.

Natural fibres such as wool and cotton compress and settle rather than holding a firm surface. That produces a plush, yielding feel, which is part of why hand-built British beds feel the way they do.

A plush surface means you sink into it, so the mattress has to form itself around your shape, and every spring in contact with you compresses differently. That requires a high spring count so each small region responds independently.

With 1,500 springs in a king, regions respond as groups. The heaviest parts of you sink together and the spine bends. That is the hammock effect, and natural fillings make it more likely rather than less because they yield rather than resisting.

For a lighter sleeper, under about eleven stone, it will not happen because you are not loading the springs enough to group them. For anyone heavier, it is a real risk.

What to do instead

If natural fillings are what you want and you are of average or heavier build, the Haluna Natural 4000 in the same range is the correct pairing and the one I would take.

If the price is the constraint, a well built synthetic-topped hybrid at 2,000 springs will support you better than natural fillings at 1,500. The Premier 2000 is the obvious comparison within Mlily.

Natural materials are a genuine benefit and they are not worth buying at a spring count that cannot hold them up.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Natural filled mattresses are recommended on their materials, and the fillings only work over the right support. Natural fibres compress and settle rather than holding a firm surface, producing a plush feel that requires a high spring count so each region responds independently. Natural fillings over a modest spring count make the hammock effect more likely rather than less, because the fillings yield rather than resisting.

Should you buy it?

Only if you are of lighter build and natural materials at the lowest available price is the priority.

For anyone of average or heavier build, the Haluna Natural 4000 is the pairing that works, and a synthetic-topped 2,000 spring hybrid will support you better than this will.

Questions people ask

Are natural filled mattresses always better?

Only over the right support. Natural fibres compress and settle rather than holding a firm surface, producing a plush feel that needs a high spring count so each region responds independently. Over a modest count they make the hammock effect more likely, not less.

Which Mlily Haluna should I buy?

The Haluna Natural 4000 if you are of average or heavier build, because that is the pairing that works. At 1,500 springs the natural fillings are not supported properly for anyone over about eleven stone.
