Mlily Gel 1000 Review
An entry hybrid pairing 1,000 springs with a gel comfort layer, and the gel is doing less than the springs are.

Verdict
An entry hybrid pairing 1,000 springs with a gel comfort layer, and the useful thing to understand is that the gel is doing less than the springs are. Gel changes how the surface feels on contact; springs change what happens to heat all night.
Buy it if
You want an entry sprung mattress and the gel layer is a bonus rather than the reason.
Avoid it if
You are buying for the cooling claim. The spring layer beneath it is doing that work.

The scores
A sound entry hybrid with a cooling story that credits the wrong component.
Reasonable for a genuine spring core at this price.
One thousand springs is the useful floor. Adequate at average build.
Good, because of the springs rather than the gel.
Not reinforced at this level.
Pocketed springs with a gel layer above.

Decoding the range
The number is the spring count, except in the foam ranges
In Mlily's Gel, Deluxe, Premier, Supreme and Haluna collections, the number in the model name is the spring count in a king size. A double has fewer and a single fewer still, because spring density stays roughly constant while the area shrinks.
In the Memory and Memory Gel collections there are no springs at all and the number is a tier marker. That is the one place buyers get caught out.
What gel does, and what the springs do
Gel conducts heat better than foam, so at the moment of contact it draws warmth from your skin faster than untreated foam would. That produces the cool-to-the-touch sensation and it is real.
The heat then needs somewhere to go. In an all-foam mattress there is nowhere: it moves a few centimetres and stops, because foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement. That is why gel foam mattresses feel cool for twenty minutes and then stop mattering.
In a hybrid it is different. Heat reaching the spring layer can actually leave, because air moves through the gaps between springs. So the gel helps heat reach the springs slightly faster, and the springs do the removing.
The practical consequence for a buyer: when a mattress is sold on cooling, look at whether there is a spring layer and how deep it is, before looking at what the comfort layer is called. Gel over foam is a treatment. Gel over springs is a treatment on top of a mechanism.
The Ortho variant at the same count
Mlily offers an Ortho version of the Gel 1000, firmer at the same spring count.
At 1,000 springs, firmer is the safer build. A firm mattress works within a modest spring count because you barely sink, so springs never compress as groups. A soft build at this count risks the heaviest parts of you sinking together and the spine bending.
Being able to change firmness without changing spring count is a genuinely useful piece of range design that almost nobody else offers.
A correction worth making
Commonly repeated, and wrong
Gel infusions are sold as cooling technologies and they change how a surface feels on contact rather than how the mattress behaves through the night. Gel conducts heat away from the skin, and in an all-foam mattress that heat travels a few centimetres and stops. In a hybrid, heat reaching the spring layer can leave through the airflow between springs. The gel helps it get there; the springs remove it.
Should you buy it?
Yes as an entry hybrid at average build, and take the Ortho version if you want firmer.
If cooling is your actual problem, buy spring depth rather than surface treatment. Otty's Original has a 16 centimetre spring layer at around 500 pounds.
Questions people ask
Does gel in a mattress keep you cool?
It conducts heat away from your skin at the point of contact, which is real. The heat then needs somewhere to go. In all-foam there is nowhere. In a hybrid, heat reaching the spring layer can leave through the airflow between springs.
How do I judge a cooling mattress claim?
Look at whether there is a spring layer and how deep it is, before looking at what the comfort layer is called. Gel over foam is a treatment. Gel over springs is a treatment on top of a mechanism.
