Aeyla Dual Pillow Review

A pillow with two different sides, which is a smaller version of the right idea.

Verdict

7.5/ 10

A pillow with two different sides, which is a smaller version of the right idea. It does not give you infinite adjustment, and it gives you a second chance without a return, which is more than a fixed pillow offers.

Buy it if

You are between two heights, or your sleeping position changes through the night.

Avoid it if

You are a broad-shouldered side sleeper or a dedicated front sleeper, where you need an extreme rather than a choice of two middles.

The scores

Overall
7.5 / 10

A sensible middle ground between a fixed pillow and a fully adjustable one.

Value
7 / 10

Reasonable, and a trial on a pillow is worth something.

Height retention
7 / 10

Holds height reasonably. Expect some settling across the night.

Support
8 / 10

Good on whichever side suits you.

Temperature
8 / 10

Lyocell cover handles moisture well, which is what you notice on a pillow.

Adjustability
6 / 10

Two options. Better than one, short of a layered pillow.

Washability
7 / 10

Reasonable. Check whether the cover is removable and washable.

Two sides against a layered pillow

There are three ways a pillow can handle the fact that nobody knows their loft before sleeping on one.

How pillows handle the height problem
ApproachWhat you getBest for
FixedOne height. Guess right or return it.People who already know their loft
Two-sidedTwo options, chosen after sleeping on itPeople between two heights, or combination sleepers
Layered or adjustable fillA range of heights, changed as often as you likeAnyone who does not know their loft, which is most people

The Dual sits in the middle, and the middle is a reasonable place to be. If you are broad shouldered and sleep on your side, or you sleep on your front, you need an extreme rather than a choice between two middles, and a layered pillow will get you there.

Combination sleepers are the real case for it

Most people are described as a side, back or front sleeper, and a lot of people are actually all three across a night.

That is a genuine problem, because the positions want different heights. A side sleeper needs the most, a back sleeper a medium amount, a front sleeper almost none. One fixed height is wrong for at least one of those positions every night.

A two-sided pillow does not solve this while you are asleep, and it does let you tune for whichever position you spend most of the night in, after finding out which that actually is. Most people are wrong about their own sleeping position, which is worth knowing before you buy anything.

The practical approach for a combination sleeper: set for the position you wake up in, since that is usually where you spend the longest stretch.

The cover matters more on a pillow than anywhere else

A pillow is the only bedding item directly against your face and neck for eight hours, which makes the cover fabric matter more here than on a mattress or a duvet.

Aeyla builds its range around eucalyptus lyocell, which absorbs moisture vapour into the fibre rather than holding it at the surface, then releases it as conditions change.

That matters because the sensation people call sleeping hot is usually clamminess rather than temperature, and a damp pillow against your face is the most noticeable version of it. A fibre that moves moisture feels cooler because it feels drier.

It is also the reason a foam pillow with a synthetic cover feels warmer than its fill alone would suggest.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Sleeping position is treated as a fixed personal attribute in mattress and pillow advice, and most people move between positions across a night and are wrong about which one they spend most of it in. Since side, back and front sleeping need substantially different pillow heights, one fixed height is wrong for at least one position every night. The practical test is the position you wake up in, which is usually where the longest stretch was spent.

Should you buy it?

Yes if you are between two heights or you move between positions. Two options chosen after sleeping on it beats one option chosen before.

If you are a broad-shouldered side sleeper or a front sleeper, buy a layered or adjustable pillow instead, because you need an extreme rather than a choice between two middles. See the Aeyla brand review for the wider range.

Questions people ask

Is a two-sided pillow better than a fixed one?

Two options chosen after sleeping on it beats one option chosen before. It is short of a layered or adjustable-fill pillow, which gives you a range of heights, but it is a real improvement on guessing.

What if I sleep in different positions?

Most people move between positions across a night and are wrong about which one they spend most of it in. The practical test is the position you wake up in, since that is usually where the longest stretch was spent, and set the pillow for that.

Does the pillow cover fabric matter?

More than on any other bedding item, because a pillow sits directly against your face and neck for eight hours. A fibre that moves moisture away feels cooler because it feels drier, and clamminess is what people usually mean by sleeping hot.
