Verdict

8.0/ 10From £599.99 UK single, direct

The softest mattress Otty makes and the answer to the complaint that follows the brand around. If you have read that Otty is too firm and concluded Otty is not for you, this is the model that changes the answer: 4,000 springs at a stated 5 out of 10.

Buy it if

You are a side sleeper, or you are lighter build, and you want Otty's spring construction without Otty's firmness.

Avoid it if

You are over about 16 stone. Five out of ten is the softest Otty makes and a heavier sleeper needs the pushback.

The mattress that answers the Otty objection

Every review of Otty, including mine, says the same thing: excellent construction, runs firm, catches people out. That is fair for the Original at 7 out of 10 and the Extra Firm at 9.

It has also left a lot of people concluding that Otty is a brand for people who like firm beds, and that is wrong. The Pure+ Hybrid 4000 sits at a stated 5 out of 10, which is the middle of the scale and softer than almost everything else in this price bracket.

One caveat I have to give, because I gave it on the Pure as well. Otty's firmness ratings have been independently disputed: Tom's Guide rated the Pure at 8.5 against Otty's claimed 6.5. I have no independent measurement of the 4000. What I can say is that it is Otty's softest by its own scale and by owner consensus, so relative position is reliable even if the absolute number may not be.

The scores

Overall
8 / 10

Otty's build quality applied to a softer feel, which is a combination the UK market lacks.

Value
8 / 10

Sixty pounds over the Pure Pro for 1,000 more springs and three more centimetres.

Support
8 / 10

Four thousand springs at 28cm. The count does real work at a softer firmness.

Temperature
8 / 10

Deep spring layer, good airflow. Softer covers usually trap more heat; this does not.

Edge support
8 / 10

Reinforced side panels. A softer mattress with good edges is unusual.

Motion isolation
8 / 10

Four thousand pocketed springs. Very good for couples.

Trial and guarantee
7 / 10

100 nights. Shorter than the competition, and this is a model people will want to test.

Why 4,000 springs matters more at a softer firmness

Here is a point that is rarely made and is genuinely useful.

On a firm mattress, spring count matters less, because the surface does not deform much and you are effectively lying on a plane. The springs are resisting rather than shaping.

On a soft mattress, you sink. Every spring in contact with your body is compressing to a different degree, and the mattress is actively forming itself around your shape. With too few springs, that produces a hammock: the heavy parts sink as a group and the spine bends. With 4,000 springs, each region compresses independently and the spine stays closer to neutral.

This is precisely why soft mattresses with low spring counts are the worst purchase in the category, and why a soft mattress with 4,000 springs is a much more sophisticated product than a firm one with the same count. If you want soft, you need the springs.

Who it suits

Side sleepers

The primary audience. A side sleeper needs the shoulder and hip to sink while the waist is supported, which is exactly what a high-count soft hybrid does. Anyone who has read that Otty is too firm and is a side sleeper should look here.

Lighter sleepers

Under about eleven stone, a firm mattress never compresses enough to contour, so you sleep on top of it rather than in it. Five out of ten is the right starting point.

Mixed couples

If one of you is significantly lighter, the softer mattress with the higher spring count is usually the better compromise, because more springs means the two of you interact less.

Should you buy it?

Yes, if you want soft and you want it done properly. This is the model that makes Otty a brand for everyone rather than a brand for people who like firm beds.

At 599.99 it is Otty's most expensive standard hybrid and still cheaper than the Simba Hybrid at 699 with a foam support base. On construction that is not a close comparison.

Questions people ask

Is there a soft Otty mattress?

Yes, the Pure+ Hybrid 4000 at a stated 5 out of 10, which is the middle of the scale and softer than almost everything in its price bracket. It is Otty's softest by its own scale and by owner consensus, so the relative position is reliable.

Why does a soft mattress need more springs?

Because on a soft mattress you sink, and every spring in contact with you compresses differently as the mattress forms around your shape. Too few springs and the heavy parts sink as a group, producing a hammock and a bent spine. More springs means each region compresses independently.

Is the Otty Pure+ 4000 good for side sleepers?

It is the model in the Otty range built for them. A side sleeper needs the shoulder and hip to sink while the waist stays supported, which is exactly what a high-count soft hybrid does. Above about sixteen stone, go firmer instead.
