Otty Pure Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Review

A good mattress with a firmness rating I do not believe. Otty says 6.5 out of 10. Independent testing says 8.5. Buy it expecting firm, not medium.

Verdict

7.6/ 10From £524.99 UK single, direct

A good mattress with a firmness rating I do not believe. Otty calls the Pure 6.5 out of 10 and Tom's Guide, having slept on it, rates it 8.5. My reading of the construction and the owner reports puts it well above 6.5, and buying it expecting a medium mattress is the mistake this page exists to prevent.

Buy it if

You want the Otty spring construction with a bamboo and charcoal cover, and you genuinely like a firm bed.

Avoid it if

You are buying it because the 6.5 rating suggests it is softer than the Original. On the evidence, it is not.

The firmness rating problem

Start here, because it is the only thing about this mattress you really need to get right.

Otty markets the Pure at 6.5 out of 10, positioning it as slightly softer than the Original Hybrid at 7. Tom's Guide slept on one and rated it 8.5. That is not a small disagreement. It is the difference between a medium mattress and a firm one.

I cannot measure it and I will not pretend to. What I can tell you is that the construction gives no obvious reason for the Pure to be softer than the Original: same 25 cm, same tall spring architecture, with bamboo and charcoal infused foam in place of the standard comfort layer. Infusing foam with charcoal does not soften it.

My working assumption, which you should treat as a judgement rather than a measurement, is that the Pure sits at or slightly above the Original in firmness, not below it. Buy accordingly.

The scores

Overall
7.6 / 10

Good construction, undermined by a firmness rating that does not match experience.

Value
7 / 10

You pay £25 over the Original for a cover upgrade rather than more mattress.

Support
8 / 10

The same tall spring core as the Original, which is the best thing about both.

Temperature
8 / 10

Bamboo cover plus a deep spring layer. Runs genuinely cool.

Edge support
8 / 10

Reinforced side panels, same as the rest of the Otty range.

Motion isolation
7 / 10

Fine. Tall springs transmit slightly more than deep foam.

What the bamboo and charcoal actually does

Two claims, and they deserve different levels of scepticism.

The bamboo cover. This is real. Bamboo viscose is soft, handles moisture better than polyester and contributes to a cooler surface. Combined with the spring layer underneath, the Pure runs cool in a way foam mattresses cannot.

The charcoal infusion. This is marketing doing heavy lifting. Charcoal is added to foam in small quantities and credited with odour control and moisture regulation. In the quantities used in a mattress comfort layer, I would not pay extra for it and I would not expect to notice it. Nobody has ever told me they chose a mattress again because of the charcoal.

Pure or Original?

Twenty-five pounds separates them, so the question is whether the bamboo and charcoal cover is worth that. On its own, probably yes, because a better cover on a mattress you sleep on for years is a reasonable upgrade.

But the firmness uncertainty changes the calculation. The Original is honestly rated at 7 and behaves like a 7. The Pure is rated 6.5 and may behave like an 8.5. If you want predictability, buy the Original. If you specifically want the bamboo cover and you like firm, buy the Pure.

And if you want softer, neither of these is your answer. The Pure+ Hybrid 4000 at 5 out of 10 is.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

The Otty Pure is widely described across UK review sites as the softer option in the Otty range, on the strength of Otty's own 6.5 rating. Independent testing puts it at 8.5, and its construction gives no reason to sit below the Original. Manufacturer firmness ratings are self-reported, use no common scale between brands, and should be treated as a rough guide rather than a measurement. If you want softer from Otty, the Pure+ Hybrid 4000 at a claimed 5 out of 10 is the model to look at, not this one.

Should you buy it?

Yes if you want Otty's spring construction with a nicer cover and you are confident you like a firm mattress. The build is the same excellent spring core that makes the Original my most recommended mattress in the UK.

No if you are choosing it because you want something softer than the Original. On the available evidence you will get the opposite of what you are buying for.

Questions people ask

Is the Otty Pure softer than the Original?

Probably not, despite Otty rating it 6.5 against the Original's 7. Tom's Guide slept on one and rated it 8.5. The construction gives no reason for it to be softer: same depth, same tall spring architecture, with bamboo and charcoal infused foam replacing the standard comfort layer.

What does the charcoal in the Otty Pure do?

Very little that you will notice. Charcoal is added to foam in small quantities and credited with odour and moisture control. The bamboo cover is a real benefit and contributes to a cooler surface. The charcoal is marketing doing heavy lifting.

Otty Pure or Otty Original?

The Original, unless you specifically want the bamboo cover and you like a firm bed. The Original is honestly rated and behaves predictably. The Pure may be considerably firmer than its rating suggests, which makes it the riskier purchase for 25 pounds more.
