White label is most of this market
A great deal of budget foam bedding is produced by a relatively small number of foam manufacturers and sold under many brand names. The brand buys foam to a specification, adds a cover and packaging, and sells it.
That is not deceptive and it is worth understanding, because it means comparing brand names at this level tells you almost nothing. Two mattresses from different brands may be closer to identical than either is to a third from a brand's own factory.
What does distinguish them is the specification the brand bought to, and the main variable there is foam density.
Density is the number, and nobody publishes it
Density is measured in kilograms per cubic metre and it is the best available predictor of how long a foam mattress holds its shape.
Standard memory foam runs from around 16 to 80, with decent comfort layers between 48 and 72. Low density foam can develop body impressions within three to five years; high density foam holds considerably longer.
Foam cost is dominated by density, which is exactly why brands competing on price stay quiet about it. At the cheap end, silence is informative rather than neutral.
Ergoflex publishes that its comfort layer is high density and has traded since 2006, which is the full guarantee period twice over. That is what a brand looks like when it has something to say about its foam.
What to buy instead at this price
If your budget is genuinely around this level, springs are available and worth having.
Silentnight's Sleep Now range starts at 169 pounds from a manufacturer trading since 1946. Emma's Original Lite at 199 has a three-zone spring layer and a 200 night trial. Inofia's Elegant at around 210 gives you 27 centimetres and a spring core.
All three give you something a foam slab does not, which is a structure that moves air and does not develop body impressions the way low density foam does.
