The Nectar Hybrid mattress is the latest mattress to join the Nectar Sleep brand. Nectar first launched in 2016 in the US and is said to sell about 1,000 mattresses a day there. Two years later Nectar has introduced itself in the UK with some key innovations such as a 365-night mattress trial and is the only climate-neutral mattress available on the UK market.
In this Nectar Hybrid mattress review, we take a closer look into the layers and how it compares with the most popular Nectar memory Foam mattress.

(Summary in Conclusion with Important Considerations)
Mattress Performance Test
1. Pressure Relief
The Nectar Hybrid mattress mainly consists of foam layers, including a layer of memory foam, which tend to be known for their pressure-relieving abilities. This proves to be true according to our tests as the Nectar Hybrid showed excellent results in all three sleeping positions.
We would however recommend that heavier individuals avoid sleeping on their front as the mattress firmness is on the softer side of medium and this could cause the sleeper’s mid-section to sink too deep into the mattress.
|• Side Sleepers||➮ The weight of the sleeper is evenly distributed across the mattress, avoiding uncomfortably added pressure around the hips and shoulder areas.|
|• Back Sleepers||➮ Comfortably cradling the sleeper’s body without being too soft to support the hips in this position.|
|• Front/ Stomach Sleepers||➮ The mattress is firm enough to support front-sleepers of light to normal weight. Heaver sleepers could potentially experience a slight sinkage in the middle section over time.|
2. Temperature Regulation
Heat retention can be a problem in mattresses that predominantly consists of foam but this is not the case for the Nectar Hybrid mattress. Nectar has strategically placed the layer of memory foam underneath the springs and not as a top layer, but rather opted for a more breathable Polyfoam layer closest to the sleeper’s body. This, in combination with the presence of smaller springs, made the mattress perform very well in our temperature tests. The heat dissipates quickly out of the mattress thanks to the possibility for air to flow through the mattress more freely.
3. Spinal Alignment
The Nectar Hybrid mattress performed well on our test for spinal alignment, maintaining the spine’s natural alignment by not allowing the hips or shoulder to sink too deep into the mattress.
It’s worth keeping in mind that the sleeper who tested the mattress is of normal weight and that the mattress could possibly lack a bit of support in the middle for someone on the heavier side, depending on their position.
4. Motion Isolation
The presence of springs will naturally give a mattress a bit more motion than one made 100% out of foam. Memory foam mattresses are best for dampening motion transfer however mattresses that contain springs may be better if you are looking for a mattress for sex.
5. Edge Support
The edge support test defines how well reinforced the edges of the mattress are and whether or not it’s possible to sleep on the very edge of it without getting the sensation of rolling off the mattress.
Tests showed good results for the inner edges, with the mattress providing a stable surface to sit or sleep on. The outer edges performed fine for a normal weight sleeper but could lack a bit of support for a heavier person. Keep in mind that roll up mattresses don't usually perform great in this area as compared to standard traditional mattresses.
Nectar Hybrid Mattress Firmness
The Nectar hybrid mattress is considered a medium firmness mattress. Many mattress in a box brands tend to opt for a neutral firmness option. This way they can appeal to the masses and keep production costs lower in order to to be more competitive in the UK mattress market.
Soft mattresses make for better options for lighter individuals whereas firm mattresses are often the first place to look as a heavier person. Be mindful that firmness and support are often terms used interchangeably which can lead to confusion. You should always seek a supportive mattress that keeps your spine aligned. Orthopaedic and mattresses designed for back pain are made to be supportive yet still comfortable.
Because of the micro spring layer, it does make the mattress feel softer as compared to a full foam mattress or a mattress with full-sized springs.
Nectar Hybrid Mattress Construction And Certifications
The Nectar Hybrid mattress, as its name suggests is a hybrid mattress. Hybrid mattresses are often marketed to be the best of both worlds. They usually combine the comfort of memory foam mattresses and the support of pocket sprung mattresses.
The layer setup is very similar to the standard Nectar mattress but with an extra spring layer. The foams used are CertiPUR certified. This means that the foam is certified to meet the standards to promote minimal VOC exposure and ultimately made without ozone depleters. At most, it may produce a light new-mattress-smell when you open it but it should disappear quickly.
Nectar Hybrid Mattress Layers
- Nectar call this top layer the 'Dynamic Support Layer'. This polyfoam is placed above the lower memory foam layer as it retains less heat and thus a better material to allow for air flow resulting in a cooler sleeping environment.
- The next layer is a layer of slow response memory foam. Memory foam is one of the top materials to use for pressure relief as it produces a so-called 'hugging-effect'.
- This is the mini spring layer that seperates the upper and lower layers and is boxed by a memory foam layer. Spring layers are great as they add breathability to a mattress. The bounce effect of the Nectar Hybrid mattress would be minimal as this layer is 2.5cm in height as opposed to a traditional pocket sprung mattress. However, becasue there are up to 1,600 individually encapsulated springs this may help with motion isolation which could make this a suitable mattress for couples. To conclude this layer it is also surrounded by a layer of foam to box in the spring contents.
- Finally, the supportive base layer. This layer is castellated, which means it has cut our channels in strategic parts to allow for certain body areas such as the hips and shoulders to sink in a bit deeper. The design help to promote a neatral spinal position and overall healthier sleeping position.
Nectar Hybrid Mattress Cover
The quilted Nectar Hybrid cover is made to draw heat away from your body and allow for air to circulate. The top cover is designed to be hollow which is rare in the bed ina. box industry.
The lower grey half of the cover is of more sturdy material with some antislip properties to keep the mattress from sliding on your bed frame.
The covers are removable but not machine washable. Spot cleaning these with warm soapy water and a fibre cloth can help, and some rubbing alcohol can tackle any tougher stains that may occur. How Thick Is The Nectar Hybrid Mattress?
The Nectar Hybrid mattress measures just under 25 cm deep which is the standard and should fit in any standard-sized bed.
What is good to know is that it can hold up to 650 pounds or 294 kg. Do keep in mind that just because it can hold a large amount of weight doesn't mean that it will be a suitable option for your spine.
