Check this before you buy either a frame or a mattress
Most modern mattress guarantees require slats no more than about 7.5 centimetres apart. Some specify less. Wider gaps are a common exclusion, and manufacturers do enforce it.
Two things go wrong with wide slats. The guarantee can be refused. And the mattress sags between the slats, which produces exactly the body impressions the guarantee would have covered.
This catches people constantly, because the frame and the mattress are usually bought separately, often years apart, and nobody mentions the interaction at either point of sale.
If you have a frame already, measure the gaps before ordering a mattress. If they are too wide, a sheet of plywood or a slat conversion is a cheap fix compared with an unclaimable mattress.
What a frame actually does for a mattress
The base does a third of the work and gets a fraction of the attention.
Even support. A mattress can only be as flat as what it sits on. A sagging or uneven base transfers directly through even the best mattress, and you will blame the mattress.
Airflow. A slatted base lets air move underneath, which matters for moisture and for the life of the mattress. A solid platform or a mattress on the floor traps moisture underneath, and that is where mould problems start.
Height. A bed that is too low is harder to get out of, which matters more with age than people anticipate. Deep hybrids at 28 to 34 centimetres also change the finished height considerably.
So a good frame protects the investment sitting on it, and on a purchase where the mattress costs several hundred pounds, spending properly on the base is not the indulgence it appears.

Solid timber bolted together can be tightened indefinitely. That is the difference between a frame lasting five years and lasting thirty, and it is why a solid frame that costs twice as much is not twice the price over its life.
