Emma Cot Mattress Review

Last updated:

After the huge success, Emma has had and is having in the UK with its flagship Emma Original mattress. They have now looked to enter new territory by bringing out the Emma cot mattress.

It is becoming ever more important to do your own independent research with baby products, bedding included. Which is why we would recommend you head on over to our cot mattress recommendations when you get the chance to learn more about what to look for and more importantly what to look out for in a cot mattress.

Let’s begin this Emma cot mattress review, where we investigate the specs, service and important cot mattress certifications. (SUMMARY AT THE END).

Emma Cot Mattress Construction

Safety codes for cot mattresses in the UK can become somewhat of a difficult thing to understand, there are so many BS marked numbers such as BS 1877-10:2011+A1:2012 (what a mouthful).

What you need to understand is the Emma cot mattress is designed to meet a newer standard known as BS EN 16890. This is a standard that tests the performance and safety which will include making sure there is no part of the cot mattress can become detached and therefore a choking hazard. Making sure it is firm enough to prevent potential suffocation. This standard even goes as far as to see if after washing the cot mattress cover it won’t shrink, therefore compressing the inner layers and resulting in a gap between the mattress and cot bed.

Emma’s cot mattress also meets BS 7177 standards which guarantee it has passed flammability standards. On top of this, the cot mattress is also OEKO-Tex® 100 certified which means that every component of the cot mattress has been tested for harmful substances and is claimed: “harmless in human ecological terms”.

As you can see the Emma cot mattress is certified and meets all safety requirements and regulations set by UK law.

Emma Cot Mattress Cover

What every parent wants in a cot mattress is practicality as well as easy hygiene upkeep. This is why Emma has made their cot mattress cover completely removable and washable at up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Emma mentions that the cover is accommodating to sensitive baby skin. This statement may be referring to the actual cover fabric. It is 100% made from lyocell, which comes from wood chips from tree harvesting which is then processed into yarn. There is also an ongoing consensus that lyocell is more sustainable than viscose fibres.

Finally, again referring to safety, the Emma design team has designed the cover in such a way to hide the zipper in a small pocket which will hinder the baby from injuring themselves. It’s also worth noting that the Emma cot mattress cover is free from whitening agents and antimony, which is a metal substance.

Emma Cot Mattress Layers

1. Inner Waterproof Layer

To keep the Emma cot mattress dry and hygienic, Emma has included an inner cover or layer that is engineered to absorb any liquid that seeps through the outer cover and prevent it from reaching the foam core. This layer helps reduce the potential build-up of bacteria.

You would think every cot mattress in the UK would include a layer like this but you will be surprised that’s not exactly the case.

2. Core Foam

The core at the Emma cot mattress is a polyfoam. Polyfoam is widely used in mattresses as it is very durable (unlikely to sag) and breathable.

It is said that the ideal room temperature for babies is around 16-20°C. Due to the open-pore structure of the foam, this promotes air ventilation and breathability throughout the Emma cot mattress which in turn helps prevent the child overheating.

How Thick Is the Emma Cot Mattress?

The Emma cot mattress is 10cm in depth. 10cm in thickness is what cot mattress manufacturers should strive for as this provides adequate support for your baby and also maintain its shape.

Emma Cot Mattress Firmness

The firmness of a cot mattress is more important than you might think. We have already touched on its safety briefly but we will try to fully explain the importance of it.

When deciding to purchase a cot mattress always choose firm over soft. This is because a firm cot mattress such as the Emma reduces the risk of “rollover” which can occur with softer cot mattresses.

The Emma cot mattress is made from a firm foam that is designed to be supportive even towards delicate body parts like the head.

P.S. remember to place your baby on his or her back to sleep and in the “feet to foot” position with their feet touching the end of the cot.

Aesthetics and Design

Most things that require extra hygiene are produced in a light or white colour and the Emma cot mattress is no different. What we particularly enjoy about the design are the playful patterns and the hidden zip. Little details like this can give you some indication as to the effort the team puts behind when creating products.

Emma Cot Trial and Warranty

To ensure you as a parent and the baby are happy, Emma has included a 45-night trial with their cot mattress. This works just like their 100-night trial for their mattresses. Once you receive the Emma cot mattress you will have over a month to allow for your baby to sleep on it and if you feel it is not suitable for whatever reason you can send it back for a full refund.

As Emma states the foams are of the highest quality they are guaranteeing that it will last at least 5 years. If anything goes wrong within that time frame you can let Emma know and they will “sort it out”.

Emma Cot Mattress Delivery

Emma works with DPD, UPS and Rhenus when it comes to shipping their products. The shipping is free and the delivery time is within 2-5 working days. Due to the restrictions at the moment, delivery is also made with minimal contact.
