Measure your mattress before you order anything
A double sheet is not one size
Standard UK fitted sheets are cut for around 25 centimetres. Modern hybrids run 28, 31 and 34, and some reach 35.
A sheet that is too shallow will come off the corners, usually in the middle of the night, and it will keep doing it for the life of the mattress.
Fitted sheets are labelled with a depth. Look for it. A double sheet is a family of sizes rather than one size, and the label is the only thing that tells you which one you are buying.
If you use a topper, add its depth too. A 28 centimetre mattress with a 5 centimetre topper needs a 33 centimetre sheet, and the sheet over both is also the most reliable way to stop the topper sliding.
Measure with a tape from the top surface to the bottom edge of the mattress. It takes thirty seconds and it is the single most common reason people are unhappy with bedding they otherwise like.
What bamboo fabric does, and the question to ask
Bamboo-derived fabric is smooth, drapes well, and moves moisture into the fibre rather than holding it at the surface. Since the sensation people call sleeping hot is usually clamminess rather than temperature, that is a genuine benefit rather than a claim.
On sustainability the picture is more mixed. The plant grows quickly without irrigation or pesticides, which is genuinely good. Most bamboo fabric, though, is bamboo viscose, made by a process that typically does not recover its chemicals.
Lyocell uses a closed-loop process where the solvent is recovered and reused, and that is part of the definition rather than a claim. So a label saying lyocell tells you about the process; a label saying bamboo does not.
Ask which process was used. Brands using closed-loop processing usually say so, because it costs more and they want the credit.
How to not ruin it
Most complaints about bamboo and lyocell bedding come down to washing it like cotton.
Wash cool. Forty at most, thirty is better. Hot washes weaken the fibre and cause pilling.
Tumble low or line dry. High heat damages these fibres fastest.
No fabric softener. It coats the fibre and blocks the moisture handling you paid for. The same applies to towels and most people do it anyway.
Do not overload the drum. Friction causes pilling, and a packed machine is friction.
