Bruno Review

A European bed-in-a-box, and this page is about the format itself.

Verdict

6.4/ 10

A European bed-in-a-box, and rather than repeat the checklist for overseas brands, this page is about the format itself. Compressing a mattress into a box does things to it that nobody explains at the point of sale, and the first week is where most complaints come from.

Buy it if

You have confirmed UK sizes and a UK returns route, and you will give it the full expansion period before judging it.

Avoid it if

You are judging any boxed mattress in its first week. It is not the mattress it will be.

What compression does, and the first week

A boxed mattress is compressed under pressure, rolled and vacuum-sealed. That is a distribution solution rather than a design feature, and it has consequences for the first few days.

Expansion takes time. Most reach full height in 24 to 72 hours, and a cold room slows it considerably, because foam is stiffer when cold. A mattress unrolled in an unheated bedroom in January may take twice as long as the box says.

It will smell. Off-gassing is normal, it is strongest in the first 48 hours, and it fades. Air the room and leave the mattress uncovered for a day before making the bed.

It will feel wrong at first. New mattresses feel different for the first fortnight, partly because they are still settling and partly because your body has adapted to whatever you slept on before. The first two nights tell you nothing.

That is precisely why sleep trials exist, and why a returns window on an unused mattress is not the same product. A mattress you cannot sleep on before deciding is a mattress you have to get right first time.

Four checks before buying from any overseas brand

Are the sizes UK sizes? A UK double is 135 by 190 centimetres, a European double is 140 by 200. The mattress will not fit a UK frame and UK fitted sheets will not fit the mattress. See the UK bed sizes guide.

Who would you contact in year three? Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 your statutory rights sit with whoever sold you the mattress. An entity with no UK presence is considerably harder to claim against.

How does a return physically work? A 30 kilogram mattress going back across a border is a different proposition from a UK collection. Ask who arranges it and who pays.

Is it a sleep trial or a returns window? Firmness is the thing buyers get wrong most often and it cannot be judged in a week.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Boxed mattresses are judged on the first night, and compression means a mattress is not itself for several days. Most reach full height in 24 to 72 hours and a cold room slows that considerably because foam is stiffer when cold, off-gassing is strongest in the first 48 hours and fades, and bodies take about a fortnight to adapt to a new surface. The first two nights on any boxed mattress tell you almost nothing.

Should you buy it?

Only after confirming UK sizes, a UK returns route and who answers a warranty claim. Those are not formalities on a cross-border purchase.

Whatever you buy in a box, unroll it in a warm room, leave it uncovered for a day, and give it a fortnight before judging it.
